Pet Portraits

This week the star of the show was Bella, the rabbit, who was volunteered to be the subject for a talk on pet portraits by Debbie Drake. With the help of Bella, Debbie demonstrated how to set the camera to obtain the best pictures of your furry companions. Her tips included using a large aperture on the camera to blur a distracting background, and allowing a fast shutter speed to be used, and to use the continuous focussing mode as animals are difficult to track.

After taking pictures of Bella, Debbie imported them to her editing program of choice; Adobe Lightroom, and she then talked about some of the changes she would make to enhance the pictures.

The challenge for members of Otley Camera Club this week was to produce a record shot of something, that was then submitted for judging. The judge was Frank Ash ARPS, who led the members through the digital and printed images systematically, in order to demonstrate what makes a good record shot. He focussed mainly on achieving the correct exposure, in order to avoid burnt out areas, and choosing a time of day to have the subject well lit. With 53 entries, the results were:

1st Darwin in Sand by Sandy Crowder
2nd Millenium Bridge by Sandy Crowder
3rd Statues – Florence Cathedral by david Rickets
