Last night there was a display of hardware such as DSLR, zoom lens, extension, tubes and 2 times converter, Paul demonstrated how to hand hold this little lot and still manage to hand hold a flashgun on an extension cable, also he uses a ring flash, the flash has to be used since there can be 4 stops of light lost with the tubes etc. He proceeded to show projected images of insects flowers moths butterflies and beetles, the colours of these small creatures is not appreciated unless seen at 5 times magnification and then at 3 feet on screen, quality varied in focus as he showed how to achieve best results, he also said shoot many frames as the chance of a single shot being sharp is rare. Knowing what you want to shoot and where and when to find it is important at the planning stage. He takes shots to record the population etc and close ups for himself, he forwards rare examples to associations, so whilst the photography is a hobby in its own right this is a spin off from the biology/ entomology angle.
